Ipratropium bromide and airways function in wheezy infants.

The airway response to nebulised ipratropium bromide was studied in 17 chronically or recurrently wheezy infants aged 4-15 months. The peripheral airway response was assessed by the change in maximum flow at functional residual capacity (Vmax FRC) and the upper and central airway response by the change in specific airways resistance. The significant reduction in specific airways resistance afte...

COMPARISON OF THE ACUTE BRONCHO DILATING EFFECTS OF INHALED IPRATROPIUM BROMIDE AND SALBUTAMOL IN PATIENTS WI TH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISE ASE

Forty-five patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were studied to compare the acute effects of ipratropium bromide (60 µg), salbutamol (300 µg) and placebo (3 puffs) on the forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV 1) and forced vital capacity (PVC). Ipratropium bromide produced a significantly greater improvement than salbutamol in both FEV1 and FVC at 15,60 and 180 minutes afte...

Nebulised therapy in acute severe bronchiolitis in infancy.

We have measured total work of breathing before and after the inhalation of water, salbutamol, and ipratropium bromide, given as nebulised solutions, in 39 studies on 25 infants with acute, severe bronchiolitis. Twenty minutes after nebulised water, mean work of breathing per minute was increased by 4% and work per litre by 10% with 2 infants having significant improvement and 2 others showing ...

Bronchodilators for treatment of mild bronchiolitis: a factorial randomised trial.

A randomised double blind trial was conducted to determine the efficacy of inhaled bronchodilators, salbutamol and ipratropium bromide, compared with placebo in the treatment of bronchiolitis. Patients, who were 2 months to 2 years of age and without underlying cardiac or pulmonary disease, received drug 1 (salbutamol or saline placebo) followed one hour later by drug 2 (ipratropium bromide or ...

Do bronchodilators have an effect on bronchiolitis?

Over the past 12 years there have been 12 randomised control trials, involving 843 infants, evaluating the effect of salbutamol or albuterol on bronchiolitis. Of these, nine (75%) showed that bronchodilators had no effect. In three studies a small transient improvement in the acute clinical score was seen. Ipratropium bromide had no significant effect. There have been five recent randomised tri...
